YOUR FIRST VISIT

Your first visit will typically involve an office consultation where we’ll do an extensive review of your medical history. We will also perform physical exam, including an ultrasound, and do some bloodwork. You may also be referred for a Hysterosalpingogram (HSG), which is an x-ray of your uterus to ensure your fallopian tubes are open and that there are no structural problems within the uterine cavity. All of this is necessary to provide you a comprehensive diagnosis and to enable us to consider all of the fertility treatment options available to you.

BRINGING YOUR PARTNER

If at all possible, it’s best to have your partner to accompany you. In our experience, we have found that 20% of the time, male infertility is the sole cause of infertility cases. And in 30–40% of infertility cases, it is a contributing factor. And yet, solving for male infertility can be one of the easiest ways to help you achieve pregnancy. So it’s wise to obtain a sample for semen analysis at the beginning. It’s also helpful to have your partner at the consultation so that you can both gain a thorough understanding of the treatments we recommend.

YOUR TREATMENT PLAN

We consider ourselves partners with you in your pursuit of parenthood. We will use our expertise and experience to make recommendations that offer you the highest rate of success. But we also understand that there are many factors involved — such as finances, timing, and some procedures’ level of invasiveness — that you may want or need to consider. So while we will always advocate for the treatment(s) that will help you achieve pregnancy as quickly and efficiently as possible, ultimately the decision to pursue one method over another is still yours.

COSTS AND INSURANCE COVERAGE

Money is nearly always on the minds of fertility patients. So we encourage you to meet with our financial consultants at the end of your first visit. They can perform a thorough evaluation of your current insurance coverage, as well as make recommendations for pursuing other financial resources like infertility loans, supplemental insurance, and grants if necessary. Knowing how you’ll handle any out-of-pocket costs from the beginning is one of the many ways to ease your mind in the month’s ahead. So it’s well worth taking a few extra minutes to do.
