What few people realize is that there are a number of “silent” conditions that can reduce or block fertility over time without ever showing symptoms. Some of these conditions can be treated (the earlier, the better) and some can be prevented from getting worse; the sooner you know about them, the better. But either way, they’re not something anyone wants to risk finding out at the last minute.
THE VALUE OF A BASELINE SCREENING
Having a fertility awareness screening well before you’re ready to conceive gives you and the doctor a baseline to work from, which is important for two reasons. One, it allows you and your doctor to identify and take action regarding any issues that could cause reproductive problems later. Two, it will help your doctor measure any changes in your reproductive health over the years to come.
WHAT THE SCREENING INVOLVES
The screening begins with your doctor taking a thorough review of your medical history with particular focus on the details of your menstrual cycle, any STDs, past pregnancies or miscarriages, and any known hormonal issues. A physical exam and transvaginal ultrasound will follow, along with a series of blood tests that help measure various levels of hormones in your body.
To check for any physical abnormalities within your reproductive system, and to ensure that your fallopian tubes are open and clear, your doctor may also send you to have a hysterosalpingogram, which is an x-ray of your uterus and fallopian tubes.
All of these tests allow your doctor to determine whether you are ovulating, what your ovarian reserve is, whether you have any chronic conditions like Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) and much more.
