There are many reasons a woman or couple may have difficulty conceiving. Fertility testing for women can help identify possible causes of infertility so that targeted treatments may be used to overcome obstacles that may be preventing pregnancy.
There are several different types of fertility testing for women we offer to our Scottsdale patients, particularly some of the tests available through F.A.S.T. Fertility Testing.
One of the first steps in fertility testing for women is to undergo a vaginal ultrasound and have their blood drawn. Together, these tests can help evaluate a woman's ovarian reserve. Evaluating the ovarian reserve is one way to try to quantify a woman's reproductive potential through egg number and quality.
Both the baseline blood draw and vaginal ultrasound need to be done within the first four days of the menstrual cycle, preferably the first, second, or third day. The blood draw needs to be done at this time in the menstrual cycle in order to measure hormone levels. Hormone levels help determine if a woman is ovulating and can also provide useful information about the ovarian reserve.
A hysterosalpingogram, or HSG, x-ray is an imaging procedure that is performed using a special dye to help view the uterus and fallopian tubes. An HSG x-ray makes it possible to see the shape of the uterus and whether there are any issues with the anatomy of the uterus that may be interfering with fertility. In addition to evaluating the uterus, the fallopian tubes are checked for any blockages or other issues that may impact fertility.
The HSG x-ray test is performed by inserting a small catheter through the cervix. A special type of dye is then injected into the uterine cavity. This dye is picked up by the x-ray where it will help to show the shape of the uterus and the state of the fallopian tubes.
Unlike the baseline blood draw and ultrasound, the HSG x-ray test must be performed once menstrual bleeding has stopped but no more than 12 days from the start of menstruation.
Our different types of fertility tests can help identify issues that may be causing infertility so that fertility treatment can be tailored to a patient's unique needs.
